London History Day

London History Day – London History Day is an annual celebration that takes place on 31 May, the day that Big Ben first started keeping time. The very first London History Day took place on 31 May, 2017. Over 40 historic and cultural institutions hosted special events, or highlighted rare objects in their collection.

***London History Day is an annual celebration of the capital’s vibrant culture and heritage, organised by Historic England.

This year, the day is themed around courage where we will be celebrating pioneering spirit, fearlessness, initiative, compassion and more which have been evident in the capital’s history. On 31 May 2018, more than 70 of London’s museums, galleries and cultural spaces will be open to the general public to reveal special behind the scene tours, as well as some extraordinary exhibits and one off events!

***Take the footsteps of Charles Dickens, Benjamin Franklin and many more historical figures as you explore Bloomsbury, Westminster and more areas!

The theme for London History Day 2018 is Courage. In the 100th anniversary year of the first women gaining the right to vote, many special events will touch on the pioneering spirit, heroism, initiative and audacity layered in our history. Later this month the Mayor of London will unveil the statue in Parliament Square of Millicent Fawcett holding a sign reading ‘Courage calls to courage everywhere’.
