Happy Valentines Day!!

“Doubt thou the stars are fire, Doubt that the sun doth move. Doubt truth to be a liar, But never doubt I love.”- William Shakespeare

Valentines Day

Every year, on the 14th of February, couples across the world come together and celebrate one of the most loved holidays out there; Valentines Day! Flowers, Chocolate gifts are exchanged among one another and all in the name of St Valentine. Who is he though and where did all these traditions come from?

A little history of Valentines Day

Little is known about Saint Valentine, in fact, all we know about the history is based on legends. Here are the 2 most famous ones!

  1. The first one stated that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. Emperor Claudius II declared that single men were forbidden into having wives and families due to it enhancing their performance. However, Valentine defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages in secret for young lovers! When he was caught, he was executed.
  2. The second one states that Valentine may have been executed for the part he played in helping Christians escape Roman prisons. While he was imprisoned, it was believed that he sent out the first Valentine greeting after he fell in love with a girl who visited him during his confinement. Before his execution, he wrote a letter and signed it “From your Valentine”.

Regardless of the tales, they both emphasize Valentines fight for love & romance.

Valentines Day: Modern Times!

Nowadays, Valentines Day is globally celebrated! From the 17th Century onward, it became popularized in Great Britain! By the middle of the 18th century, it became more common for lovers of all social classes to start exchanging small tokens of affection i.e. gifts, chocolates or handwritten notes. 1900’s is where everything changed, cards were being printed for a way for people to say things they’re shy to unable to express.

Today, according to the Greeting Card Association, an estimated 1 billion Valentine’s Day cards are sent each year, making Valentine’s Day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year. Women purchase approximately 85 percent of all valentines.
